Periodontal Therapy in Port Moresby
Periodontics refers to treatment of gum diseases. The most common form of gum disease is the plaque, which is a soft, sticky substance that builds up on your teeth. It is made up of bacteria that feed on sugar from the food and drinks that we consume. The buildup of plaque will result in gum infection that might bleed when you brush the teeth known as gingivitis.
The gums will detach from the teeth if plaque builds up just under the gumline. This results in more tartar buildup in the gap between teeth and gums, which will in turn result in the weakness of bone supporting the tooth. We call this stage chronic periodontitis. It is painless and as a result, most people are unaware of its occurrence. However, if this is left untreated, gum disease will lead to loosening and eventual loss of teeth.
Thankfully, gingivitis can be prevented and even cured by maintaining good oral hygiene – brushing twice a day and also by using other oral hygiene aids such as dental floss and medicated mouthwash, as advised by our Port Moresby dentists. But first, the tartar should be removed by means of scaling and polishing.
In certain severe cases of gum disease, surgery may be required, which involves the gum being pulled away to allow affected areas to be treated. This will be done under local anaesthetic. If gum disease has been neglected and has progressed too far, the affected tooth or teeth will need to be removed.
