Renewing Your Smile at Mills Dental Care
Cosmetic Dentistry in Papua New Guinea
Dark tooth stains are inevitable due to our consumption of darkly tinted foods and drinks (soda, spicy food, coffee, etc.). However, advanced teeth whitening technology has enabled our Port Moresby dentists to whiten teeth without adversely affecting your tooth structure.
Teeth Whitening Techniques
Almost all whitening methods are similar in concept, but some are much more effective because of the way the material is delivered to your teeth. Another contributing factor is the concentration of the gel being used, which is why less potent over-the-counter whitening systems usually don’t give patients the results they are hoping for.
Custom trays are Mills Dental Care’s preferred method of whitening, because you have more control over the shade that you are trying to achieve. In tray whitening, an impression is taken and a custom tray is made.
Then, a supply of whitening gel is given to be worn in the tray for a few hours each day (techniques differ) for a set period of time until an acceptable result is achieved. Sensitivity of the teeth is a normal side effect of this method and is almost always transitional.
Dramatic Porcelain Veneers
Veneers and laminates are a thin shell of porcelain or resin that is bonded to the surface of the teeth. This can change their shape, shade and position to improve the cosmetics of your smile in a short period of time.
First, one of our Mills Dental Care dentists will perform a complete examination of your teeth to determine if veneers are ideal for you. Veneers often provide the opportunity to dramatically transform the aesthetics of your teeth and smile into what you’ve always wanted them to look like. They also add strength.
Since they are very thin, veneers are considered one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments available. Most of the time, very little or no tooth structure is removed before placing them here in our Port Moresby clinic.
Cosmetic Tooth Recontouring
Is there a small defect in your smile that always draws your eye in the mirror? A chip in a front tooth, some worn edges, or shallow pits or grooves in the tooth enamel are all minor issues, but they do stand in the way of having a perfect smile. If you suffer from one or more of these problems – even to the extent of a minor fracture or overlap – they all can be fixed using a simple procedure known as tooth contouring and reshaping.
Recontouring or reshaping of the teeth (also called odontoplasty, enameloplasty, stripping, or slenderizing) is a procedure in which small amounts of tooth enamel are removed to change a tooth’s length, shape, or surface. It is one of the most conservative cosmetic treatments available.
The quick and painless procedure produces results that can be seen immediately. Your visit improves your appearance by creating more “harmony or balance” in the look of the entire smile.
Recontouring is an effective method to correct minor imperfections, such as:
- Fixing small chips in the tooth
- Smoothing out bulges or pits in a tooth’s enamel
- Adjusting slight irregular tooth shapes caused by too many or uneven teeth
- Adjusting the length of the canines (the pointed eyeteeth)
A recontouring procedure can also improve overall dental health by removing crevices or overlaps between teeth in which plaque or tartar accumulate. However, it is not recommended if your teeth have extensive imperfections, such as a substantial chip or deep fractures. Nor is it a substitute for veneers and bonding; but it is often used in combination with these procedures.
